Desperate English Housewife in Washington, chapter 68

Sandy Hook Elementary School

So, the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut….such a sad, sad thing to blog about.

It’s the first time I’ve ever felt ‘close’ to an incident. Kids the same age as Harry….a school in the country……

Horrific. I listened to Obama’s speech as I drove to Harry’s school to join the pick up line. If you haven’t heard it, see/listen to it here: Emotional.

I’ve never been so glad to join the sometimes tedious school pick up line.

So, Harry asks why I’m a bit sad when I pick him up, and I tell him I am happy to pick him up. Then I tell him a modified version of events, and he says that his school is safe and that he is a superhero and won’t let anyone hurt his friends. Bless his cotton socks.

Then as we turn into home, he says to me ‘I have tears in my eyes’, and I ask him why. And he says ‘For those children at the school with the bad man.’

Oh, from the mouth of babes……

This was issued locally just this afternoon:

Howard County Police said Friday afternoon they would be increasing patrols around schools next week after an elementary school shooting in Connecticut.

Howard County police spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn said the department recently concluded in-service training to review the department’s “active shooter plan” with its members.

“We also conduct drills to simulate mass shooting incidents,” wrote Lllewelyn in an email. “The procedure has police working closely with the school system, which has systems in place to reach out to parents quickly.”

Schools, guns, children….WTF? Those words should never appear in the same sentence.

It’s the gun thing again. The commentary on gun laws here is now rife via Twitter and on the news networks.

I still don’t get the gun laws in the USA. It’s a crazy, sad and stupid thing when it leads to such terrible events as this.

  1. Sarah says:

It’s difficult to predict nutter behaviour though so while it’s a good idea to train police in the event of a mass shooting, it’s impossible to tell where one will happen next.

While people with mental health issues are not monitored and treated, and the gun laws are so lax, it’s just a matter of time before this happens all over again.
