Desperate English Housewife in Washington, chapter 50

Hurricane Sandy

It’s here………and it’s wet and it’s windy….getting the basement ready.

Even the mall is closed. It’s that bad. School’s off. I have a four-year old to occupy.

The storm woke me up this morning and sounds like a rubbish rainy British day. It’s going to get worse…..

It got worse.

Things I have learned from Hurricane Sandy.

In the BFG movie they fart to go whizz, pop, whizz bang up in the air. I thought they burped a la Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The farting bit is pretty funny. (Note: we had to watch a ‘family’ movie all together in bed!)

Storms are scary and sooooo noisy and houses do shake, just like in the movies.

I love electricity and all that it offers. I love communications, social media, my fridge and freezer, microwave and lights and computers. I need electricity and will never, ever take it for granted again!

Cups of tea do help. We popped out for one when our power went out. The trip back was frightening, with flying debris in the road. It was a relief to get home to candlelight.

When lights flicker on and off, that feels like poltergeists are taking over. I know they aren’t, but it sure does feel like it.

No real sound in your near vicinity apart from wind creates a sense of the apocalypse about it. Eerie.

Halloween is very important to Americans. Governor Christie of some state somewhere has declared it to be rescheduled if the storm is still raging on Weds 31st. Ace.

I need Twitter news. I love it and it is bloody useful.

Cats sense storms. They know…and they miaow to let you know all about it. A lot.

Bagels are loved by Americans. This morning everyone was queuing for bagels.

I take it you’ve got the power on again, or have you posted this from your phone?

Sounds a pretty scary experience, anyway. Much scarier than Halloween!
